Chapter 5 - Mommy! (1)
The entire dinner table turned dead silent after she had said that.
The house belonged to Ye Qing. Everybody sitting around the table were aware of that, including the pregnant cousin-in-law. It was just that she had already been living here for a few years, so she subconsciously thought it was already her house.
The cousin-in-law’s face darkened, and she was stumped for words for a little while. She just angrily glared at the baffled Ye Qing, who looked dubiously at her.
The big aunt wasn’t an easy person to deal with either. With a very fake smile on her, she said, “We are a family. There’s no such thing as yours or ours. Ah Qing, you don’t live in the village anyway. Why let the house go unused? Might as well let your cousin and cousin-in-law stay here. Your cousin-in-law just got pregnant, you can be a little more considerate, Ah Qing.”
Ye Qing nodded in agreement, “Big aunt is right. Family should, indeed, take care of each other.”
Everybody found her words unbelievable.
Every since she had walked in the door, all the relatives had noticed that Ye Qing was very different than she was 9 years ago.
The Ye Qing from 9 years ago would not have a comeback after what the big aunt had said; she would only look at her angrily but wouldn’t be able to think of anything to rebut her.
Unlike how she was now.
She had matured after all and knew better and understood the importance of a family.
The big aunt was quite pleased with this outcome. She felt that when she brought up the issue of her young son in the future, the chance of success would be quite high.
Ye Qing smiled and didn’t care how everyone was looking at her up and down.
She was getting somewhat thirsty. She had no water besides her, but she noticed that everybody had alcohol or other types of beverages in their hands.
Ye Qing scooted backward a little in her chair and looked under the table. Sure enough, she saw a large bottle of cola a few seats away from her.
Ye Qing’s eyes beamed, and she got up from her chair.
Her actions baffled everyone one again. For a second there, nobody moved their chopsticks, but just watched Ye Qing silently.
They watched her walk in front of a snotty child, bent over, and picked up a bottle of cola. She then picked up a one-time use paper cup, walked back to her seat as though there was nobody else there, and poured herself a large cup.
She only said their house was her house metaphorically speaking. Did she really think this was her house? The big aunt was livid.
Ye Qing took a large gulp of the cola satisfyingly, then the smile on her face disappeared all of a sudden.
She tilted her head down slightly and looking at the black, bubbling fluid, a clear drop of tear rolled down her cheek.
Ye Qing’s erhu and tragic-like voice rang, “Since we are a family, there is something that I want to share with you. This time I came home, I don’t plan on leaving again.”
Everybody was shocked.
The big aunt slipped and shouted out, “What? You are staying here for good?!”
Ye Qing nodded slightly and wiped away some of her tears. She looked at everyone sadly and continued, “Not too long ago, I suddenly passed out while I was at work.”
She paused for a little and more tears rolled down her cheeks. She was choking back her tears and could barely talk, “The doctor said… said I have maybe a year or so remaining…. Plus this illness that I have…. It’s not treatable… He suggested for me to find a nice place and spend the rest of my time… so, so I quit my job and came back...”
Everybody was dumbfounded, “What?!”
Big aunt, “What kind of illness do you have?”
Second aunt, “Cancer?”
“No….” said Ye Qing as she shook her head and gently bit her lip. “Something rarer and more unusual. You wouldn’t even know it if I tell you, so I am not going to share that.”
The cousin-in-law frowned and felt that something was wrong with her cousin-in-law, “Well, just tell us anyways. What is it?” Is it something infectious?!
