Chapter 27 - Cooking Meat Skewers (2)

Among everything that Cheng Huan had brought home, there were some raw ingredients and seasonings.

She had never been in the barbeque business before. As much as she was confident in her own cooking, she couldn’t guarantee that her first attempt would taste good. Just to be on the safe side, she planned to practice making them at home first in the next couple of days. She’d start selling them once she made sure that they taste good.

The ingredients were mostly meat – there were lamb, beef, chicken wings, etc. There was also an ice bag inside.

It had been so hot that day that the ice had almost all melted. Even the meats that were frozen before have started getting soft.

Cheng Huan washed the beef and lamb clean and marinated them along with the chicken wings.

Meat takes longer to marinate. Cheng Huan put the rest of the stuff into the refrigerator and spent some time playing with XingXing.

The meats were ready after half an hour.

The sun was almost all down and the sweltering heat subsided a little.

XingXing didn’t eat a lot during lunch and his stomach was already grumbling by now. Leaning on the table, he watched Cheng Huan work and gulped. “Mommy, is this what we are having for dinner?”

The marinated meats were a beautiful color and just looked delicious. Cheng Huan, wearing disposable gloves, was skewering the strips of meat. The ones that were ready were put aside.

XingXing stared at the pile of meat and couldn’t stop salivating. He gulped and reached out to poke the meat.

And was disappointed that they were not edible.

Barbeque was not healthy and Cheng Huan didn’t want him to have any, so XingXing had fruit rice that night.

Fruits of all colors were placed on top of the fluffy and soft rice. The smell of rice complimented the smell of the fruits perfectly. XingXing took one bite and completely forgot about the raw meat.

With the bowl in hand, XingXing devoured a big bowl of rice. When he was finished, he placed his hands on his little tummy and said, still feeling not completely satisfied, “Mom, I want to have this again tomorrow”

After spending more time with Cheng Huan, the little kiddo was less timid than he was before. In the past, he’d only suggest subtly if he liked something; now he’d just say it out loud.

“That’s fine.” By now she had already accepted how he could want to have the same thing over and over again if he liked it. After responding to him casually, she picked up the plate of raw meats and got ready to go downstairs.

The barbeque grill that she bought had already arrived. It wouldn’t fit inside her house so she left it downstairs.

The unit that she rented was a corner lot, and there were walls on both sides.

There was a small strip of grassy area between the wall and the building, and Cheng Huan planned to barbeque right there.

Barbeque would produce a lot of greasy smell. Cheng Huan felt a bit bad when she made that decision. Luckily the direction of the wind was helpful today and it wouldn’t blow the smoke toward any residences.

She was going to barbecue with smokeless coal. Even though one could now use an electric grill for barbeque for the sake of being environmentally conscious, Cheng Huan felt that food cooked that way was just a little lacking.

Between tasty food and environmental consciousness… she picked the first one.

Translator’s Rambling: Translator fails to see how fruits go with rice. Ugh…. And no way that could outweigh skewer meats. =)
