Chapter 127 - They looked like people that couldn't tell a lie (1)

Xiao Ji had already got into the jeep.  She couldn't say they wouldn't take him to Yao Town now.

He was in a hurry to go to his hometown because his parents were still there. The zombie virus had suddenly broken out, and his elderly parents were home alone. He was very worried. Bei Nuan understood.

Bei Nuan silently sat in the passenger seat. She stared at the winding mountain road ahead while planning.

Going to Yao Town wasn't a big deal. Just because the novel's Bei Nuan had gotten injured, it didn't mean she would be injured. It wouldn't necessarily be so coincidental that she bumped into big trouble as soon as she went up the mountain. Even if she did bump into it, she could be unscathed if she was careful.

Xiao Ji guided Lu Xingchi through the twists and turns of the mountain roads as they went deeper into the mountain range. The roadside was surrounded by dense vegetation. Occasionally, they would see steeped fields. There was a long distance from one village to the next.

In such a place, there were fewer people, which meant fewer zombies, and the ride was smooth.

It was almost noon when they saw a mountain in the distance that was higher than the  surrounding mountains. Layer upon layer of green trees blocked their view, but they could faintly make out many houses.

They had arrived.

Yao Town was an ancient town that was different from other towns. It was built on a mountain.

A long time ago, the vassal king for this area had revolted. He had been unsuccessful and retreated all the way to here. He built a stockade on the mountain and declared himself king. Thus, it was better to say he was a mountain king.

Yao Town's terrain leaned against the mountains and faced the water. It was backed by an unclimbable cliff. There was only one way up the mountain. It was easy to defend and hard to attack. It truly was a naturally good place to set up camp.

The mountain was self-sufficient, and the mountain king happily guarded his treasure of a land until he died of old age.

Everything about Yao Town was good except for its inconvenient transportation.

In the past years, many families from Yao Town moved to the foot of the mountain. Most of the houses in the ancient town were left empty, and there was almost no one left.

This lasted until two years ago when someone discovered Yao Town.

A dilapidated ancient town had a natural charm. It attracted groups of tourists that like its authentic run-down atmosphere and brought liveliness to the town. The town on the mountain came back to life with shops and inns opening up.

At the foot of the mountain, the road branched out into smaller roads along a gentle slope. The people from Yao town had neatly built single-story houses in that area.

"Where's your home?" Bei Nuan asked Xiao Ji.

Xiao Ji pointed towards the one-story houses on the side of the road.

Bei Nuan sighed in relief. The novel's Bei Nuan had gotten injured in the ancient town on the mountain. So, as long as she didn't go up the mountain, she should be safe.

Once Xiao Ji safely got home, then Fang Chen's last wish was achieved. The matter was over, and she could quickly leave this place without anything bad happening.

As the jeep got closer to his home, Xiao Ji got noticeably nervous.

There were figures slowly walking on the road, and their movements were lifeless and sluggish. After coming all this way, through mountains and rivers, there were still zombies.

Lu Xingchi pulled over to the side and walked in front to lead Xiao Ji towards the residential part of the gentle slope.

Xiao Ji's home was right next to a small path on the slope. It was a traditional courtyard home with white walls, black roof tiles, and a bright red door. It looked neat and tidy.

Xiao Ji rushed to the door in one breath.

Surprisingly, the door was locked.

With a light pull, Lu Xingchi unlocked the door for him. At this moment, Xiao Ji didn't wonder why Lu Xingchi was able to unlock the door so easily. He immediately entered the courtyard and started searching the rooms, but he didn't find his family.

"Dad? Mom?" Xiao Ji was anxious.

"The front door is locked, and it's tidy inside. No one has rummaged through this place. The tables and areas in plain sight are cleaned up. There's no mess on the ground." Lu Xingchi calmly helped him analyze. "Check if the food and valuables are still here. If it's gone, they probably went somewhere. It doesn't look like they were in a hurry when they left."

Xiao Ji finally calmed down and looked through the stuff.

"The rice is gone. A lot of stuff is gone. Even the chicken coop is empty. There's nowhere else they could have gone except up the mountain. Our ancestral home is on the mountain -"

Lu Xingchi suddenly passed by him and went out the door to the courtyard.

When Xiao Ji caught up, he saw Lu Xingchi with a cold expression and aiming his crossbow at the front door.

In the courtyard, Jiang Fei was protectively standing in front of Bei Nuan, Du Ruo, and Tang Tang and holding a dagger.

At the front door, there was a group of vigilant men armed with knives. They were dressed like locals.
