Chapter 25 -  They couldn’t have her inheritance, and she couldn’t have them (4)

“Mom, can you really not tell why those people attending the banquet today and why they were nice to me? For Sinian’s inheritance, of course!” Yu Duo didn’t want to look at these handsome boys in this light, but there was no shortage of pretty girls from prominent families in City S. Why was it that all those handsome boys put their attention on her instead of any of the other prominent girl?

Love?

That’s a joke.

She was a widow. What else did she have to offer than her billion-dollar inheritance?

Sure, she was pretty, but not so uniquely pretty. They were showing fondness toward her for her billion-dollar inheritance.

She could appreciate handsome boys, but she couldn’t throw her intelligence out the window.

“What about the inheritance? The inheritance is part of the package. Simple, just do a prenuptial agreement before you remarry. What’s yours is still yours, nobody could take it from you.” Mrs. Yu sighed and said, “Mom just want you to come out of Fu Sinian’s shadow sooner rather than later is all.”

Fu Sinian, standing to one side, snickered. And, since when did he become Yu Duo’s shadow?

Anyone who didn’t know better would think he had been abusing her these last few years.

“Mom, don’t say that about Sinian. He had helped dad a lot in the last few years.”

“Yes, I admit that he had helped your father a lot. I am really appreciative of that, okay? But you are my daughter, I am not going to sit back and watch you be his widow for life!”

Yu Duo knew that she needed to end this conversation. There was no talking with her mother about this, not right now, “Okay, mom. We will talk about this later. It’s getting later. I am going to head out.”

“Oh, my child…”

Yu Duo got into her car and took off amidst her mother’s nagging.

On her way back, Yu Duo’s Weibo was drowned in friend’s requests. She opened up her inbox, and it was filled with the prominent young men that she had just met on the banquet.

Including Su Yang, Zhao Chen, Gu Mingzhe, et al.

So many handsome boys wanted to friend her; it would be silly of her to decline them.

Yu Duo accepted all of them and, instantly, all sorts of greetings came flooding in. Some even asked her out on 1:1 date next time.

Yu Duo responded to all of them, and declined them all for the time being. The days were still young; there was no rush.

After she had responded to everyone, she held her cellphone in her hand and let out a sigh.

How come she felt like she had just cast a net?

She felt sleazy.

No, wait… she was not the same as these men. She just wanted to ogle them; she never dreamed about having them. Unlike them, they were after her inheritance.

Come to think about it, they couldn’t have her inheritance, and she couldn’t have them.

Nobody was losing anything.

That sounded fair to me!

What so sleazy about that?

Not sleazy at all!

***

It was almost midnight when Yu Duo arrived back at the mansion. She didn’t want to wake Aunty Lian, so she went upstairs quietly, locked the bedroom door, and kicked her shoes off. She removed her necklace and earrings as she walked and casually tossed them onto her dresser before she took off her dress and stood in front of the full-length mirror almost fully naked.

Her side profile still shaped like an “S” with an inch of extra fat.

Yu Duo eyed herself in the mirror and couldn’t help but praise herself, “My body still looks great!”

This was the result of three-years worth of working out and watching her diet.

Albeit it was mostly for Fu Sinian, Yu Duo was happy about the outcome.

After she had removed her makeup, Yu Duo applied a facial mask and happily soaked into the bath tub. All the soreness of her body was relieved and she started dozing off inside the tub. Her eyelids was drooping and she was about to fall asleep.

BAM!

A loud noise coming from inside the bedroom and sounded exceptionally loud in this quiet night.

Yu Duo was awoken immediately. She tried to call out toward the outside, “Aunty Lian? Was that you?”

But no response from Aunty Lian.

Was she just hearing things?

The water was starting to get cold as was she. Yu Duo got up from the tub and took a quick shower.

BAM!

Another noise from inside the bedroom.

Yu Duo shuddered and turned the shower off to listen carefully for more noises from the bedroom. But there was not another peep in the next 5 minutes.

She would be lying to say that she wasn’t scared.

Ever since Fu Sinian’s funeral, Yu Duo felt that something was off inside the mansion. Never mind that she had heard weird noises from time to time, the weather hasn’t gotten cold particularly lately, but she felt a chill from time to time and it always made her shuddered.

Thinking about all of these gave her the chills.

Did Fu Sinian really come back?

Yu Duo’s heart skipped a beat.

If it really was Fu Sinian returning, then with her actions the last few days, he’d for sure eat her alive or have her skinned.

No, no, no. That was not possible. Ghosts were not scientific. As a youth of this day and age, she should not be so superstitious!

Thinking of this, Yu Duo quickly finished her shower, put on her pajamas, and tiptoed to the bathroom door quietly.

She then put her ear against the door to listen to any noises inside the bedroom.

There was nothing.

Perhaps she was hearing things.

Slowly she opened the bathroom door and slowly she poked her head into her bedroom.

Yu Duo was afraid to look, so she squinted her eyes as she scanned the bedroom and only opened them up slowly. It was after she had scanned the entire room before she realized one of the windows were opened and a book was tipped over by the wind.

That must be the noise that she had heard early.

Yu Duo let out a sigh of relief and walked out of the bedroom.

She laughed at herself for being too imaginative. There was no such thing as ghosts in this modern-day society!

She shut the window and yawned. She hesitated to turn the light off and finally decided to leave the light on.

This was the latest she had come home in the past three years. She was very sleepy as soon as her head hit the pillow and starting falling asleep before long.

It wasn’t quality sleep nonetheless. Perhaps the light over her was a little too bright, perhaps she was just too tired, she was half asleep but still have some consciousness.

Some consciousness but not fully awake. She could feel that she couldn’t move, as if she was weighted down by something. She wanted to talk but she couldn’t. She was filled with fear and even her breathing became difficult. Her face reflected the discomfort that she was feeling.

But, quickly, the discomfort disappeared suddenly as if the pressure on top of her was gone. The feeling of wanting to move but couldn’t or wanting to talk but couldn’t was gone. Yu Duo’s brows relaxed and she felt asleep in comfort.

Suddenly the light in the room turned off.

The entire room basked in complete silence.

“Mmm…”

Between the heavy breathing was a long-suppressed soft moan, followed by a series of soft sobs. Somewhere between the mumbling there seemed to be some begging for mercy.

Somehow the sliding door was opened again.

Wind poured in from the outside and lifted the curtains way high.

Moonlight poured in from outside the window and stealthily hid back behind the dark clouds.
